Railway vs DigitalOcean App Platform

Railway meters CPU and memory by the second. DigitalOcean App Platform sells fixed container sizes at a monthly rate. Both deploy from git or containers; both work when you need something longer-lived than a Vercel serverless function. Figures below are from each product's public pricing docs as of October 2026.

Pricing notes

Railway: railway.com/pricing and docs.railway.com/pricing/plans. Plan fee applies toward usage; stopped services do not accrue compute.

How this maps to FixStack

When serverless timeouts or always-on workers push you off Vercel functions, either platform can host the API. Railway is linked from several FixStack "tools that help" slots. If you already run Droplets or Spaces on DigitalOcean, App Platform keeps billing in one place.

FAQ

Which is cheaper for a small always-on API?

DigitalOcean App Platform's smallest shared containers start at about $5/mo with included bandwidth, which can beat a busy always-on Railway service billed at full CPU/RAM rates. Railway often wins when traffic is bursty or you enable sleep so idle time costs little.

Can I keep disks between deploys?

Railway offers persistent volumes (published around $0.15/GB-month). App Platform containers use an ephemeral filesystem; durable data needs a database or external storage.

Does FixStack earn a commission?

Yes on Railway referral links. DigitalOcean has no FixStack affiliate link on this page.
